How Simulation-Based Training Builds Safer Surgeons

In surgical education, there is a universal truth: the best place to make mistakes is before entering the operating room.

This is not just a comforting idea — it is a principle that has reshaped how we train the next generation of gynaecological surgeons. At the heart of this change lies simulation-based training, a core element of the GESEA educational programme.

Learning Without Risk

The GESEA programme recognises that psychomotor skills and spatial awareness cannot be taught solely through observation. These are abilities that must be trained — and tested — in environments that are:

  • Controlled

  • Reproducible

  • Free of risk for the patient

GESEA’s use of validated simulation tools like LASTT, SUTT, HYSTT, and optional robotic modules ensures that every participant:

  • Learns through repetition

  • Refines their technique

  • Builds confidence before facing real surgical procedures

By the time a candidate earns a Level 1 certificate, they have demonstrated not only knowledge but also hands-on competence under standardised conditions.

From Safety to Performance

Simulation is not just about avoiding complications. It is about reaching a higher level of surgical performance. Candidates who train on simulators:

  • Understand instrument limitations

  • Improve hand–eye coordination

  • Develop habits of precision and economy of movement

This translates directly to shorter learning curves, better surgical outcomes, and increased team trust when entering the OR.

A Safer System for All

Simulation-based education also contributes to:

  • Better patient experiences

  • Fewer surgical errors

  • Greater institutional accountability

At GESEA Napoli, we are proud to provide access to five fully equipped training stations for both internal and external candidates. Each session is monitored and guided by experienced tutors who ensure that the learning environment is safe, focused, and professionally demanding.

Simulation is not a replacement for surgery. It is the preparation surgery deserves.

Before we operate, we must train — and before we train in theatre, we must train in simulation.
