Why GESEA Is the New Standard in Gynaecological Endoscopic Training

In recent years, gynaecological endoscopy has undergone a remarkable evolution. Less invasive procedures, advanced technologies, and a growing focus on safety and effectiveness have redefined clinical practice. In this context, the training of the modern gynaecologist can no longer rely on informal apprenticeship alone. A structured, rigorous, and internationally recognised educational path is essential.

This is where the GESEA – Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgical Education and Assessment programme comes in.

A European Programme, a Global Standard

GESEA is more than just a course; it is a full training, assessment, and certification system. Developed by ESGE (European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy) and EBCOG, it is today the international benchmark for those wishing to specialise in endoscopic gynaecology.

It adheres to the European–American Joint Recommendations, which state that every university hospital with endoscopic surgical activity should establish a dedicated training centre.

Three Levels, Two Pathways, One Goal: Excellence

The GESEA programme is structured across three progressive levels of competence:

  • Level 1 is the gateway for beginners, focusing on theoretical knowledge and psychomotor skills.

  • Level 2 includes two specialised tracks: MIGS (Minimally Invasive Gynaecological Surgery) and ECRES (Endoscopic Reproductive Surgery). Both include shared and specific modules, with optional robotics components.

  • Level 3, currently under development, will focus on advanced subspecialties such as gynaecologic oncology, complex endometriosis surgery, advanced reproductive surgery, and specialised hysteroscopy.

From Knowledge to Skills: The GESEA Method

One of GESEA’s strengths is its balance of theory and practice:

  • Theoretical content is delivered via the ESGE Academy e-learning platform and evaluated through online quizzes.

  • Practical training includes exercises on dedicated simulators: LASTT (laparoscopy), HYSTT (hysteroscopy), SUTT (laparoscopic suturing), and optional robotic training.

  • Finally, surgical competence is evaluated by certified experts through standardised surgical procedures.

The GESEA Center in Naples: A National Benchmark

The GESEA Training Center in Naples, directed by Prof. Attilio Di Spiezio Sardo, was the first GESEA-accredited center in Italy. It is currently one of only three Italian centres authorised to provide both Level 1 and Level 2 certifications.

Located at the AOU “Federico II”, the centre offers regularly scheduled courses and certifications, guaranteeing high-quality training, cutting-edge instrumentation, and a team of expert tutors. It is the ideal environment for anyone pursuing a career in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery.
