From Theory to Practice: How to Prepare for the GESEA Level 1 Certification

Taking the GESEA Level 1 certification is a crucial first step for anyone pursuing a career in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery. This certification not only proves theoretical knowledge but also validates the psychomotor skills necessary for safe and effective clinical practice. Preparing with care is key. Here’s how to do it.

Who Is the Level 1 Certification For?

Level 1 certification is aimed at gynaecologists and OBGYN residents with basic laparoscopic and hysteroscopic skills. You don’t need to be an expert yet, but you should be confident with the fundamental concepts and tools of endoscopic surgery.

Step 1: Build Your Theoretical Knowledge

The first requirement is passing the theoretical quiz, based on the content available on the ESGE Academy platform.

Key topics include:

  • Fundamentals of endoscopic gynaecology

  • Pelvic anatomy

  • Pathophysiology related to laparoscopy and hysteroscopy

  • Instruments and technology in the OR

  • Managing complications

💡 Pro tip: Make full use of the ESGE Academy and complete the self-assessment quizzes — they closely resemble the official test.

Step 2: Train Your Psychomotor Skills

The next step is mastering the practical skills, evaluated through standardised exercises. At the GESEA Training Center of Naples, candidates have access to five dedicated training stations and practice on:

  • LASTT – laparoscopy training: improves hand–eye coordination, depth perception, and precision.

  • HYSTT – hysteroscopy training: teaches safe and effective movement within the uterine cavity.

  • SUTT – laparoscopic suturing: a more advanced module to build dexterity and control.

🎯 Each task is timed and evaluated according to strict performance criteria. Accuracy and stress management are vital on certification day.

Step 3: Certification Day

The certification session (held monthly in Naples) includes:

  1. A written theory test

  2. Practical tests on all training modules (LASTT, HYSTT, SUTT)

The session lasts approximately 8 hours, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Tutors and assessors are highly experienced and provide supportive but rigorous evaluation throughout the day.

A Key Credential Recognised Across Europe

Earning the GESEA Level 1 Diploma allows candidates to move on to Level 2 (MIGS or ECRES) and opens doors to international career opportunities and training.

This certification is officially recognised by major European scientific societies and is fast becoming an essential qualification for any gynaecologist in the field of endoscopy.
